Of course! When you switch to Candy Chase / Sky Hunt, the slot you were playing is paused. When you come back, the game will resume.

To get a reward, I need 4 steps. What if I get 5? Do I get all the rewards that are along the trail?

No, you only collect the reward from the step you arrive at.
